About Simmons University
Simmons University, located in Boston, Massachusetts, is a private university with a rich history dating back to 1899 when it was founded by John Simmons, a prominent clothing manufacturer. In 2018, it transitioned into a university. While its graduate programs are coeducational, its undergraduate program remains dedicated to women.
Simmons University has earned accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education. In 2020, the university accepted undergraduate applications from 83 percent of applicants. The university comprises two campuses: the Academic Campus, housing five academic buildings, and the Residential site, which includes nine Georgian-style residential buildings, encompassing a total of 12 acres in the Fenway-Kenmore area.

Kotzen Scholarship Benefits
The Kotzen Scholarship is a comprehensive award that covers tuition, housing, and board expenses. Additionally, recipients receive an extra $3,000 designated for extracurricular activities such as study abroad, research support, and more. This scholarship, which supersedes any prior merit awards, spans four years of full-time undergraduate education.
Eligibility for Kotzen Scholarship
To be eligible for the Kotzen Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Enroll as a first-year student for the fall semester.
- Simmons University offers the flexibility of choosing whether to submit standardized test scores. However, for those who opt to submit scores, a minimum of 28 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT is recommended.
- Non-native English speakers must submit an English proficiency test, such as TOEFL/IELTS, TOEFL fundamentals, SAT/ACT scores, or the Duolingo English Test.
- Maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.3 or higher.
- Completion of college preparatory coursework, including a high-level math course either during or before the final year of high school.
- Demonstrate a history of enrolling in honors, AP, and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes as offered by their respective high school systems.
The Honors Program at Simmons often attracts students who align with these requirements.
How to Apply for Kotzen Scholarship
The Kotzen Scholarship application requires the submission of a résumé listing activities and affiliations, along with a short answer and a formal essay in response to the provided prompts. Essays and resumes must be emailed in PDF or Word Doc format to [email protected] with the subject line “Kotzen Application” by December 1. Each page of the document should include the student’s full name and birthdate.

Essay Prompts
- What would you do with an additional $3,000 in annual funding (for study abroad, short-term courses, summer internship tuition, and/or research support)?
- In an essay of no more than 500 words, take a stance on the argument that leaders are either “made” or “born.” Support your perspective with an example from history or your personal life.
Candidates selected as finalists for the scholarship will undergo interviews in February.
