About Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU):

Toronto Metropolitan University, also known as TMU or Toronto Met, is a public research university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. While it has various buildings throughout Toronto, the university’s main campus is situated in the Garden District. TMU consists of seven academic faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Community Services, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Faculty of Science, The Creative School, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, and the Ted Rogers School of Management. These faculties are further divided into departments and schools to manage various academic disciplines. Additionally, the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is offered by the institution.

The university was initially established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, named after Egerton Ryerson, a significant figure in the development of Canada West’s public school and teacher’s college systems. In 1964, under new provincial regulations, the institution was renamed Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. During the 1970s, it received a restricted license to grant degrees under that name. The university underwent a comprehensive reorganization in 1993 and adopted the name Ryerson Polytechnic University. Several years after the creation of its graduate school, it changed its name to Ryerson Institution in 2002. In 2022, the university was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University due to concerns regarding Egerton Ryerson’s role in the Canadian Indian residential school system.

TMU enrolls approximately 44,400 undergraduate students and 2,950 graduate students during the 2019–20 academic year. As of 2017, there were around 170,000 TMU alumni. The university’s sports department manages several varsity teams that compete in the Ontario University Athletics Conference of U Sports under the name TMU Bold.
