About the Scholarship:
Applications are now open for the University of Edinburgh’s 2023-2024 Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarships.
The Nyerere Scholarship, offered by the Centre of African Studies, is a prestigious opportunity for talented Tanzanian students to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh. This scholarship provides financial support for Tanzanian students to undertake a one-year postgraduate program in African and International Development at the Centre for African Studies.

Value of Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship:
The Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship includes the following benefits:
- Coverage of tuition fees.
- A yearly stipend, which will be advised but was equivalent to £13,500 in the 2022-2023 academic year.
- The stipend will be disbursed in quarterly installments after full matriculation, with payments in September and December 2023, as well as in March and June 2024.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Tanzanian applicant accepted into the full-time MSc program in African and International Development.
- Hold the equivalent of a first-class or 2.1 honors undergraduate degree in humanities or social sciences from the United Kingdom, or expect to obtain it.
Interview Process:
The Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the CAS Selection Panel during a meeting in June. The results will be communicated to all scholarship applicants in June 2023.
Academic excellence will be a key factor in the scholarship decision, and candidates should hold the equivalent of a first-class or 2.1 honors undergraduate degree in a humanities or social science field, or expect to achieve it.

- Apply for admission to the full-time MSc African and International Development program at the University of Edinburgh.
- Use the scholarship application portal to submit your scholarship application. In your application, explain what Nyerere’s legacy means to you and how it relates to your future aspirations.
- Ensure that your references provided for the program in Africa and International Development are submitted by the scholarship deadline on your application.
Please note that the Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship funds, and it does not cover flight and visa application fees.
Application Deadline:
The application deadline for the Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship is June 15, 2023, at 23:59 BST. Applicants should have already applied for admission to the University of Edinburgh, and it may take up to five working days for access to the scholarship application form to be granted after applying for admission.
